A transom window is a horizontal window above a door, entryway or another window. They are often part of a complete leaded glass entryway, with sidelites and glass in the doors in addition to the transom window overhead. Bevels and textured clear glass make a dramatic statement and admit light while providing a measure of privacy.

One application for the transom over the front door is to display the street address in stained glass. This works especially well in Victorian homes, but is also effective in any style home where the transom window is easily visible from the street. We have also made transoms which reflected architectural elements in the facade, complemented the view outside, or completed the design of the entryway glass.

Transom windows are also sometimes found over interior doors in older homes, or over french doors. Replacing plain glass with a stained or beveled design makes for a beautiful accent piece.
